I’m here to choose a groom for me, oh; more glorious an eve couldn’t be,
Look, that dashing young man there, one with the sexy indolent stare,
Or that one with eyes of summer blue, declaring undying, indubitable, effervescent love true,
And he, with the charming winsome smile, wants to dance with me a longer while…
What more could a dame ask for, or get??…And yet…
They fail to touch my heart, my soul,
I couldn’t give to them, my all, me whole,
For I have seen the lovely face…a moment standing still, for an eternity, in space,
That moment when stars all shone so bright, my spirit was filled with a beatific light,
And in the light I saw, so clear, whom I held so precious, so dear,
For whom my heart was filled with love, a love as pure as the Lord above…
That angel face, my life, my love so true…is no one else, my darling- but YOU!!
What is it my love?? What is it you fear??
Why do you tremble so, why hesitate to be near??
Oh can’t you see these people, the very ones who held us dear?
Can’t you see how they shun us, how odious is their glare!!
How to us they turn their backs, how they think our love is vile,
Oh it breaks my heart, their contempt…I long for an accepting smile!
Oh my love, my sweetheart, yes I see it too!
Their derision, their disdain…it spears my heart through,
But acceptance on the terms they ask, it’s too high a price to pay!
Being accepted for who we aren’t is worthless, wouldn’t you say??
Wouldn’t you be living a farce, with a pretend-self…a life of pretence?
Being loved not for you, accepted only in ignorance??
Oh no I couldn’t leave you, neither could I leave me,
For if I’m worth only what I’m not, just who would I be??
We are not the same as many; the difference can never be erased,
Just the blindfolds be kept on longer, the issue to be later faced,
An issue not born of our perversity, not a mad rebellious urge to be ‘not same’,
But an issue of our right not to betray our spirit, embrace our essence and get no blame,
An issue that we not be made to choose, a choice that rips our soul into two,
For what would you choose, if the choice were between your life and you?
Don’t you see that if they see this, rendered a non-issue this would be,
For who could continue with such travesty when the sheer absurdity of it they can see?
Oh my darling your naïveté, so refreshing it is to see,
It all makes sense to us, but is definitely not as easy,
For man as rational as he can be, it is all a choice for him you see,
And though why he should choose to, one wonders, he can be as irrational as anyone can be!
If you say that he can choose, then let’s not make the choice for him,
In saying that their prejudice is irrevocable, prejudiced let us not be,
Let us put forth our say, let then them decide what we deserve,
Our rightful place as an equal or to be labelled and stowed in a hellish conserve,
Isn’t it worth risking the brickbats, our freedom…the bliss of normalcy?
Anything is worth that my love, on this with you I agree,
Say what you have to say, where it takes us that we’ll see,
But wherever the road leads us, my sweetheart, be sure,
We’ll walk the way together, together for our life shall we implore,
Implore with as much dignity as we can muster,
I for one feel stripped of it by the indignity in which our being is forced to foster!
Pray do not say that, night can’t last much longer,
Light the candle with me, with your conviction make mine stronger,
For what does it take to combat darkness?
A single ray of light and courage to hold the beam,
Despair not my darling, it’s difficult but not as much as it seems
Let’s tell them what it’s like to battle for one’s being,
To have to assert our existence with every breath…
Or to lose faith in oneself, live with your head hung in shame,
Feeling disgust for one’s existence…oh, even the thought of it’s profane!
Ah, for its easy to say ‘to hell with the world’, difficult to live in exile,
To forsake the right to be one with everyone, to be considered depraved and vile,
That, for what? For not living a lie, not distorting our self to fit into a role,
For taking a shot at love, the only kind that’d make us whole!
Is it too much to ask, to be able to live the way we were intended to be?
Intended I say, for no other way could set our spirits free.
Is it too much to ask, to be accepted without conditions laid,
To expect to be spoken to, without one being insecure or afraid?
And how’d you feel being treated, with barely concealed contempt,
To be expected to grovel in gratitude that they’re being so tolerant?
To be treated as parasites living off humanity, not being granted the dignity of being human,
For as irrelevant a factor as the colour of one’s skin, or being a man or a woman!
Then there are those, who must be cringing even as we say this,
For they don’t look at us with contempt,
We can live in any corner of the world for all they care,
As long as we’re invisible, they’re carefully indifferent!
Why so? We ask, you say we’re abnormal, we’re queer,
Unnatural are our ways, away from Gods’ path we steer
But where do you draw the line, how do you make the distinction,
You tell us that when we love and be loved, while man messing with nature leads us to extinction!
The sun shines as bright for us, the sunset no less panoramic,
The sea, the sky, the snow clad mountains, nature for us is no less majestic,
Then why is it by our fellow man that we’re are convicted and condemned,
Why is it that we are spurned and decreed a life where suffering doesn’t end?
We seek to stand up for ourselves; our spirit is crushed even as we try,
Denounced by our loved ones, even as we seek to live –we die,
Leaving our hearts behind, to save our souls we flee,
Our tears then harden to shards of glass,
Turned to thorns so they don’t bleed us dry…
Let this not be the fate of us all, let us save the world for generations to come,
Let us give them love and life and freedom, oh hear our poignant plea,
Open your hearts, remove your blinkers, burn your prejudices- SET US FREE!!
